The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) is a leading Johannesburg based regional foundation established in 1997 by investor and philanthropist George Soros, and is part of the OSI network of foundations located all over the world. The foundations share a common mission of developing more open societies through support to a range of programmes in various areas including education, media, human rights, social, legal and economic reform.
The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) is an African space for proactive engagement on governance and human rights advocacy; playing a key role in initiating, leading and actively participating in advocacy and related interventions in 10 countries in Southern Africa and on the continent. The Johannesburg-based regional foundation works in Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe (with specialised programme managers in Angola, DRC, Swaziland and Zimbabwe – these being the four countries in which significant structural governance and transition questions still obtain).
OSISA pursues open society ideals using a unique model of flexibility, sensitivity and responsive regional engagement, while maintaining political independence.
OSISA is looking to make the following Johannesburg-based appointments:
EDUCATION PROGRAMME MANAGER
The Education Programme Manager will be responsible for assessing and recommending project support to the board of Trustees’, overall development and management, monitoring and evaluation, administering of grants of OSISA’s Education portfolio. The Programme Manager will also be responsible for networking and liaison with donors and stakeholders in 10 countries in southern Africa, including the DRC .
Practical experience in education and capacity building work with civil society organisations is required.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a masters degree, preferably in Education or any other appropriate post- graduate qualification. In addition, the candidate will have at least five years experience in successful implementation of development programmes in Education or a related sector in the SADC region and will have an advanced understanding of the education issues affecting the SADC region.
HIV and AIDS PROGRAMME MANAGER
The HIV and AIDS Programme Manager will be responsible for assessing and recommending project support to the board of Trustees’, overall development and management, monitoring and evaluation, administering of grants of OSISA’s HIV and AIDS portfolio. The Programme Manager will also be responsible for networking and liaison with donors and stakeholders in ten countries in southern Africa, including the DRC .
Practical experience in HIV and AIDS and capacity building work with civil society organisations is required.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a masters degree preferably in Public Health, Communication Studies, Development Studies or any other appropriate post- graduate qualification. In addition, the candidate will have at least five years experience in successful implementation of development programmes in HIV and AIDS or a related sector in the SADC region and will have an advanced understanding of the HIV and AIDS issues affecting the SADC region.
For both positions, experience of working in a funding organisation is preferred, the candidates must have excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to facilitate consultative processes. Ability for independent use of computer packages such as MS Word, Excel, Internet and e-mail is a must. The candidates should also be open to innovation and experimentation and have an appreciation of the complex multi-sectoral nature of the response to Education and HIV and AIDS. Excellent verbal and written communication, research and analytical skills are required. Fluency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite and knowledge of some African languages spoken in the region, including knowledge of French and/or Portuguese, is desirable.
An attractive remuneration package, commensurate with experience, including relocation costs within Southern Africa, is offered. Both positions are offered on a three-year contract.
EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Executive Director of OSISA, the Executive Assistant will ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the Executive Director’s office, full confidentiality in all aspects of work, supporting the executive management team in the operations of the organisation, management of information flow, and follow-up on deadlines and commitments.
This is an exciting and challenging position suitable for a holder of a university degree in Business Administration or Social Sciences and solid secretarial training. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as an Executive Assistant, Office Administrator and/or Programme Assistant, is required. Proficiency in the use of modern office equipment and office software packages, such as MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc and the use of web-based databases for information management is very critical.
The ideal candidate must also possess excellent interpersonal skills and initiative, and must be able to speak and write impeccably in English. Command of other business languages of the region, such as French and Portuguese will be an added advantage.
This position is offered on a two-year contract with an attractive remuneration package, commensurate with experienced and is offered to South African citizens only.
