According to a recent article from The Guardian, titled African Twitter map reveals how continent stays connected, we were quite surprised to find that Zambia does not rank in the top African nations of Twitter users.
Africa’s biggest economy, South Africa, generated the most tweets with over 5m, more than double second placed Kenya’s 2.48m. Then came Nigeria (1.67m), Egypt (1.21m) and Morocco (0.75m).
The original research behind this article was completed by Portland and Tweetminster and based on over 11.5 million geo-located Tweets originating on the continent during the last three months of 2011.
Our recent win at the Africa Cup of Nations lit up our Twitter account so there’s definitely a significant number of Zambians around the world tweeting, but after reading the article and checking out the World of Tweets map we realized, perhaps we should do a better job connecting new and existing Zambian Twitter users online.
We’ve created a list called The Zambian Twitterati as a first attempt at this. Check it out and let us know if we’re missing anyone.
